Editorials and Essays is my anthology of, well, just that, editorials and essays. I am
an avid reader — I hesitate to use the word "voracious" since there's not enough time to be a
voracious reader — and a medium I enjoy reading is the column. Among my favorite columnists are
Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, and Mike S. Adams.
Being a writer is something that sounds simple until you actually try it. I tried testing my ability
by committing myself to writing an essay each week. That reinforced the notion of the difficulty of
writing. In Common Nonsense, the 2002 collection of his columns, Andy Rooney wrote,
"The dimunition of the job of writing in the minds of readers may have something to do with the double
meaning of the word 'write.' When a five-year-old learns to put the letters C-A-T on a piece of paper
with Crayola, his mother says he is 'learning to write.' When people underestimate how difficult it is
to write something that is going to be printed or spoken before an audience, they are confusing that kind
of writing with the writing done with Crayola."
But I digress. I will come out with a new column when circumstances warrant. Until then, enjoy the
archives of Editorials and Essays on jimpoz.com.
